Sand Pool Filters

The sand used in a pool filter is #20 silica sand that’s approximately 45 to 55 millimeters in size. To put it in perspective, algae is approximately 1.5 to 15 microns. There is good news about this type of filter: they actually become more efficient as they collect dirt and other particles.

Cartridge Pool Filters

This type of filter is made from spun polyester. It’s pleated and wrapped around a heavy plastic or PVC core. Similar to sand, it traps dirt and particles of 25- to 100-microns in size. This means you might have some clarity issues with your pool. The longevity also varies. Cartridge filters can last anywhere between one and five years, depending on size and type of debris it has to filter. The general rule is 2,000 hours in a filter pump, but it might not last as long if you enter the pool with suntan lotion, deodorants, and other self-care products.
